2010 NFL Mock Draft
Version 7.0 - Final
updated April 19, 2010
Detroit did a lot of upgrading during the 2009 off-season and it paid
off. The team solidified the quarterback position by drafting franchise
player: Matthew Stafford. Stafford had a true learning experience
starting from day one and showed that with time, he is going to be
a star. Detroit is heading in the right direction and will continue to
do so by drafting DT-Ndamukong Suh. Many analyst are projecting
Suh to possibly land number one overall and is the most NFL ready
prospect this year. An every down defensive tackle that has an
unnatural combination of both size and speed. Suh attributes much
of his speed and athleticism to playing soccer as a youth. The
Nebraska star finished his senior season as a Heisman finalist
racking up a team high 82 tackles and 12 sacks. Suh also has 4
career interceptions, with 2 being returned for touchdowns. Detroit
may have wanted to win more games this season, but with the
addition of Suh, they will be happy to rebuilt their defense around such an athlete.
Tampa Bay is arguably the worst team in the NFL right now. The team
is in a rebuilding mode that will take several seasons. The NFL is a
league that is characterized by wins and losses. With that said, Tampa
Bay would have been better off losing their last two games in order to
draft Ndamukong Suh. Now that the Buccaneers are out of the running
to draft Suh, they will draft the next best Defensive Tackle on the board:
Gerald McCoy. McCoy is a solid defensive lineman who terrorized Big
12 backfields. The former Sooner has excellent lateral movement up
and down the line of scrimmage and great footwork. One downfall
that became evident at the Combine is his perceived lack of strength.
McCoy only produced 23 total repetitions on the bench-press. McCoy
will fit perfectly as a three-technique in a 4-3 base. Additionally for the
Buccaneers, he will be an immediate upgrade over under-achieving
Ryan Sims and aging Chris Hovan. The team currently has a pair of
solid DE's, and McCoy's addition should further help their efforts. Look for McCoy to enter the
league and not miss a beat going from the NCAA to the NFL level.
Defense! The Kansas City Chiefs had a miserable season on
defense. The Chiefs ranked 30th overall and allowed 26.5 points
per game in 2009. Additionally, the Chiefs had the 2nd lowest
sack total with only 22 on the season; which is extremely poor
for a team running a 3-4 alignment. Defense will be the priority
and focal point during free agency and the draft. Luckily for the
Chiefs, a player of Eric Berry's caliber does not come around
often. Berry is a maniac on the field and with exception to Suh,
he is regarded as possibly the best overall player in the draft.
Berry is an absolute ball-hawking safety. The Atlanta area
product has tremendous skills and had the advantage of being
coached by one of the NFL's all-time greats, Monte Kiffen, last
season. The Tennessee star has 14 career interceptions and
over 500 interception return yards. Kansas City will draft not only the best player available,
but also an immediate starter who will help turn the defense around immediately.
This will be one of the more interesting picks come April. The
Redskins are in a perfect position to either trade down and add
picks or draft the best player available in Eric Berry. Reports keep
surfacing that Dan Snyder is interested in drafting a franchise QB
regardless of the McNabb addition. With that, the Redskins will
draft for need this April, having a competent GM in Bruce Allen.
The skins have not drafted an offensive lineman in the first two
rounds since Chris Samuels (2000). Most recently Samuels retired
as a result of major injury problems (neck/spine injury). The team
will look to draft and rebuild arguably the worst offensive line in the
league. Snyder and company typically address the offensive line
using a “patch work” method which is evident by signing both Mike
Williams and Levi Jones during the 09' season. Although not the
sexy or marketable pick the franchise is use to targeting, Russell
Okung will provide stability in the trenches. Okung is a stud lineman from Oklahoma State
and one of the best tackles in the Nation. Okung has tremendous quickness, great use of
leverage, and has complete control over his large frame. Okung will have an immediate
impact as the Redskins look to rebound and rebuild from the inside out.
Seattle is in a tough spot with the #6 pick, but they can only blame
themselves. Previously, we anticipated Seattle would draft Jimmy
Clausen. However, recent trades with San Diego in which Seattle
gave up 20 spots in the second round and a 2011 third round pick
for Charlie Whitehurst, leads us to believe the team has found their
quarterback. BPA can't really play a factor unless the team wants
too much money invested in the quarterback position, along with 3
potential starters - Clausen would currently be the BPA at this point.
Another pressing need Seattle needs to address is the offensive
line. Seattle's o-line allowed 41 total sacks and 91 QB hits. The run
game did not fair well either as the team only averaged 97.9 yards
per game. Walter Jones' career is a question mark, as the 36 year
old has indicated he may retire due to a series of season ending
injuries. Locklear is better suited as a RT, but has been forced to
play LT. Because of the uncertainty and performance of the o-line, Pete Carroll can not rely on
the current lineup. Trent Williams had a great career at Oklahoma and wowed scouts/coaches
at the combine. Williams has experience playing both right and left tackle positions as he
started for a dominant Oklahoma team. Williams will start from day one for Seattle.

About
The Oakland Raiders were the most up-and-down team in 2009. They
were able to beat Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Denver but
also lost to Washington, Cleveland and Kansas City. Going back to
2003, the Raiders have drafted in the top 7 five times. On paper, the
team seems to be solid with premier names filling certain positions,
but those players are unable to perform consistently. Typically at this
position, the Raiders and Al Davis tend to shock the NFL by drafting
certain players out of left field. This year, Al Davis and company have
somewhat choreographed their pick and will also draft for need.
Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell will step in and provide
stability to the offensive line. Campbell is one of the best tackles in the
ACC and has anchored down the starting left tackle position since his
sophomore year. At 6-7, 315 pounds, Campbell displays the size and
mobility left tackles need at the NFL level. Campbell had a freakish
combine, running a sub 4.8 forty and performing well in all other areas.
This alone is reason for Davis to draft the former Maryland Terp. Campbell enters the 2010
draft as a top ranked prospect who will help Oakland's offensive line and potentially fill the void
left vacant by former 1st rounder Robert Gallery.
The St. Louis Rams need an overhaul, especially at the QB position. Marc
Bulger was released during the off season. Injuries at the quarterback
position is the most significant injury an NFL team can have. After 2006,
Bulger missed an average of 4+ games in each consecutive season.
Although the teams record (14-45 since 2006) is not completely Bulger's
fault, the need to upgrade the quarterback position is undeniable. Enter
Sam Bradford. Many question Bradford's ability to overcome a shoulder
injury which resulted in season ending surgery. However, Bradford's
collegiate accomplishments (Heisman Trophy Winner) and performance
at Oklahoma can not be overlooked. Bradford has the physical build and
knowledge to be a successful QB and leader at the professional level. He
has already bulked up to 236 pounds and is well on his way to a full
recovery. However, he will need to transition and learn to take snaps from
under the center as opposed to shotgun every play. Exactly one year ago
many scouts and analysts had Bradford ranked higher than former overall first pick, Matthew
Stafford. This year, the Rams will take full advantage of his early departure and draft their next
franchise  quarterback.

#10 - Jacksonville Jaguars
Derrick Morgan
Defensive End
Georgia Tech
The Bills have not had a solid quarterback since Jim Kelly. Other than
Chan Gailey needs to start his head coaching legacy in Buffalo on the
right foot - by drafting a legitimate starting QB. Currently, the Bills have
a trio of unproven candidates: Trent Edwards, Brian Brohm and Ryan
Fitzpatrick. All three would be second string players on other NFL
rosters. With the recent trades between Seattle and San Diego and
the offseason moves by Cleveland, Jimmy Clausen should fall easily
to the Bills at #9. I am not as high on Clausen as many other analysts/
mockers. Clausen thrived against lesser opponents and struggled
against ranked opponents. However, given his lack of talent at both the
WR and O-line, his production is outstanding. Clausen had the luxury
of being coached by Charlie Weiss. But, Clausen's success in the NFL
will be achieved because he is so fundamentally sound and has all the
intangibles you look for in a young QB. However, the Bills will need to address the O-line and WR
positions. With time and if given the right tools, Clausen will develop into a solid starting NFL QB.
#9 - Buffalo Bills
Jimmy Clausen
Quarterback
Notre Dame
Previous Pick: Anthony Davis
Previous Pick: Dez Bryant
Cleveland started the season off as one of the worst teams in the NFL,
but managed to go 5-1 at the end of the season with the single loss
being to the Chargers. If Cleveland can carry this momentum and new
attitude into 2010, they may prove to be actual contenders. However, in
order to achieve that, the Browns will need to improve their secondary
and overall passing defense that ranked 31st in the NFL. The Browns
secondary allowed 244.7 passing yards per game (4th worst) and over
23 points per game. Not only was the secondary incapable of covering,
but they were also unable to produce turnovers, as the team only had
10 interceptions. The 5-1 run put the Browns out of contention for safety
Eric Berry. But, Joe Haden, the #1 CB in the 2010 draft will fall into their
laps. Haden played for arguably the nations #1 defense at Florida. The
former Gator has incredible cover skills and is a solid tackler. Several
have downgraded Haden for his "slow" 40-yard time at the NFL Combine. Haden was clocked at
4.57. Although this was a disappointment, it is obvious when watching film on Harden he plays
much faster that what his 40-yard time indicates. He is smart and instinctive; often putting
himself in positions to make a play even before the snap. Don't let the below par 40 time fool you.
The converted quarterback proved his athleticism by starting as a true freshman at Florida.
Harden will be a welcomed addition to a Browns team looking to make a statement in 2010.
The Denver Broncos have traded away arguably their two best
players in the past two years: Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall.
With Marshall gone, the team will have to find a replacement and
new legitimate #1 receiver. Dez Bryant is far and away the best
wide receiver prospect in the draft. Many feel drafting Bryant might
be a mistake, as the organization can not afford to accomodate
another "diva" type player. However, the difference is that Bryant
will get a top-10 type rookie contract, while Marshall was given
4th round compensation. Not only will Bryant enter his rookie year
with a large contract, but possibly as an immediate starter. Many
compare Bryant to 09' phenom Michael Crabtree and current star
Andre Johnson. At 6'2 - 220, Bryant catches absolutely everything
thrown his way, and will carry this physical, dominant mentality
with him to the next level. Not only is Bryant the BPA available at
this point in the draft, but an absolute steal for the Broncos at the #11 pick. Hopefully Bryant
learns from Crabtree's rookie mistake and does not hold out for 2010.
#11 - Denver Broncos
Pick acquired via trade with Chicago Bears
Dez Bryant
Wide Receiver
Oklahoma State
Previous Pick: Rolando McClain
Previous Pick: Terence Cody

Round 2
#6 - Seattle Seahawks
Trent Williams
Offensive Tackle
Oklahoma
This will be one of the more intriguing picks this year. You have a
team struggling both performance wise and economically. It has
been made public that if home-town-hero Tim Tebow is available,
he will be taken: this will not happen with the 10th overall pick.
Garrard is not a terrible QB and the team could use upgrades at
several other positions - which are more pressing. The Jaguars
defensive line only collected 10.5 sacks in 2009. There were 10
players individually  in 2009 who equaled or amassed this total.
Even though the d-line has failed to produce, I do no agree with
drafting a defensive lineman at 10 overall. Reason being is I do
not think the team is prepared to write-off both Derrick Harvey (1st
round pick) and Quentin Groves (2nd round pick) who were both
drafted in 2008 - or their most recent free agent pick up:
Aaron
Kampman. But, the team has prematuraley (in my opinion) written
off WR Dez Bryant from their draft board. Bryant would fill a greater
need for the team, as the Jaguars have not had a productive
receiver since Jimmy Smith. With that, BPA comes into play and Derrick Morgan would provide
much needed help and pressure to an underachieving defensive line.

#12 - Miami Dolphins
Brandon Graham
DE/OLB
Michigan
Miami will be in a tough position with the 12th pick. The Dolphins
addressed some of their bigger needs this off-season by trading for
WR, Brandon Marshall and signing MLB, Karlos Dansby. Nose Tackle
is a very high priority, but Williams and Cody would be a reach at this
pick. With that, Miami needs to address another pressing issue at the
outside linebacker position. Joey Porter signed with the Cardinals and
Jason Taylor was also lost via free agency to the New York Jets. Can
Cameron Wake take on the position full-time? Regardless, the team
will need another play-maker opposite him. Brandon Graham has had
a tremendous career at Michigan and had a great Senior Bowl. His
stock has risen drastically because of this. Questions will revolve
around his ability to transition from a down 4-3 end, to a stand-up 3-4
OLB. He absolutely has the athleticism to make the change, but it will
take time. At 6-2 - 263, Graham has the perfect size to be both able and productive. The
Michigan star has experience playing both LE and RE on the defensive line. His combination of
speed and hand work to fight off tackles is regarded as the best in the Big-Ten. Graham can be
compared to All-Pro Dwight Freeney, but will show he is even more versatile while playing OLB
for Miami.
