NFL Uncapped 2010 Season and Effects on the Draft: 12/29/09

How will a potential uncapped 2010 NFL season effect the draft?  According to one source, with an
uncapped year comes volatility with contracts and significant player movement.  Many teams will look
towards the draft (and obtaining several draft picks) in order to fill their rosters with younger players
during this unstable situation.  Predictions are becoming more and more rampant that teams with high,
expensive draft picks will look to parlay those picks in an effort to accumulate more picks.

Teams like St. Louis, Detroit, Cleveland and Tampa Bay will ultimately have high draft picks, but need
help and/or depth at multiple positions.  It would be in these teams best interest to move down in draft
position, acquire more picks, and revamp their respective rosters with youth and talent.  With an
uncapped year, these teams may not seem as attractive to Free Agents looking for both cash and
more importantly, winning potential.

To illustrate how draft pick trading works, we look at the costs of the #10 draft pick potentially trading
for the #1 overall draft pick.  According to the
NFL Draft Value Chart, the point differential is too wide
of a margin, as the #10 draft position does not have enough "value" to trade positions.  The #1 overall
pick is currently valued at 3000 points, while the #10 pick is valued at 1300 points.  Even if the team's
second round (480 points), third round (220 points) and fourth round (82 points) picks were thrown
into the trade, the value of all four picks combined (2082 points total) is less than the 3000 point
equivalent.  Although it makes sense to trade down for both economics and depth, the value attached
to each draft pick makes it nearly impossible.
