Possible 2010 draft trades:
With the 2010 NFL draft only hours away, many anticipated draft trades have yet to occur. This year, many NFL
teams are keeping their intentions and plans closely guarded. This time last year, the #1 overall pick (Matthew
Stafford) already had a contract in place. With rumors and speculation floating around, what will actually happen
come draft time? Drafthuddle.com takes a look at some of the more viable scenarios that may occur prior or during
the 2010 NFL draft.
This trade rumor may come as a surprise considering the success Williams has had in
Carolina. As a starter (2 seasons), Williams has 2,632 rushing yards and 27 total TDs.
This production was also achieved while splitting carries with up-and-coming star:
Johnathan Stewart. Williams will be 27 heading into 2010 and is still in the prime of his
career. However, with Stewart and Goodson on the roster, Carolina may be able and
willing to get top value for Williams. Stewart is fully capable of carrying the load full-time
in Carolina especially behind one of the leagues best run blocking offensive lines. In
two seasons (as a backup) Stewart has 1,969 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns.
Carolina's two-heading rushing attack known as "smash and dash" is probably the leagues best duo. But, Carolina
does not have a first round draft selection this year. Last year, the Panthers traded away their 2010 1st round draft
choice to San Francisco in an effort to draft DE - Everette Brown. Some of the possible suitors who may be willing to
trade for Williams are Seattle, San Diego, and Detroit. Williams may not warrant a top 20 draft pick, but a late 1st
round pick/early 2nd round (or other package) could entice Carolina to pull the trigger. At this point, the Panthers
have to address multiple positions and have the depth/talent at RB to trade a player of Williams' caliber.
Its no secret there is tension between Haynesworth and the Redskins. The $100M man had a
lackluster performance in 2009. On top of that, he refuses to workout with the team and change
from a 4-3 DT to a 3-4 lineman. Additionally, the Redskins traded for Donovan McNabb putting
Jason Campbell in a tough situation. Campbell has clearly been replaced, but will he be content
as a backup? The Redskins have denied any and all trade rumors regarding Haynesworth, but
the willingness to move Campbell is on the table. Washington only has four draft picks for the
2010 draft and only 1 in the first three rounds. The team desperately needs youth and depth at
all positions, specifically the offensive line. If Washington wants to part ways with Haynesworth
and Campbell, they may receive considerable compensation for both players. Buffalo, Cleveland
and possibly even Pittsburgh (Roethlisberger suspension) may be willing to sacrifice a mid-round
draft choice to obtain a starting caliber quarterback. On the other hand,
Haynesworth, when he is healthy, is arguably one of the most dominant defensive lineman in
the league. Detroit would make sense given his familiarity with Jim Schwartz. Tampa tried to
make a run for Haynesworth last year in free agency but were outdone by Washington. Could
they be interested again? The interesting thing about dealing Haynesworth to Detroit, is Detroit
would most likely only be willing to provide a 2nd round draft pick OR swap first rounders plus
additional later round picks. If this trade comes to fruition, Ndamukong Suh may be off the Lions
draft board and Russell Okung could be the pick, which may or may not ruin Washington's draft
plans. The strategy involved with either trade is very interesting given the circumstances.
It's no surprise that the Steelers are shopping around Roethlisberger. The franchise made
a statement by trading away Holmes for a 5th round draft pick. Rumors have been swirling
that if a team is willing to part ways with a top 10 draft pick, the Steelers would entertain.
Could this be smoke screen? Although possible, its doubtful considering Big Ben's six game
suspension and the organization's zero-tolerance policy for misconduct. If the Steelers do
trade their two time Superbowl winning QB, will they draft a QB first round? Couple their two
first round picks to move up? Top-10 QB talents could only mean Jimmy Clausen if Bradford
goes number one. This however, is a possibility given Pittsburgh's position.
Any team in desperate need for a young, mammoth sized Left Tackle can contact the Ravens.
Baltimore has made it public that they are willing to deal Gaithers at the right price. The 6-9,
350 lbs monster has truly progressed since being drafted in the NFL's supplementary draft.
Internal talks have led many to believe that superstar Michael Oher can and will move to the
LT position. The Ravens offensive line is very deep at the tackle position with Cousins and
Yanda (RG) both able to fill in at RT. Gaither, who is comparable to San Diego LT - Marcus
McNeil - would help anchor down any offensive line. Washington, Buffalo and Oakland are all
in need of a solid, starting LT.
Other possible draft day trades:
Please note that these predictions are based off of speculation from around the league. This year, NFL teams have
done a good job of keeping information within. We will find out shortly if any of these predictions come true and if so,
it will make for a very interesting draft and even more interesting 2010 season!
