San Diego Set to Open Camp Without Top Pick - Ryan Matthews July 25, 2010
San Diego, CA - The Chargers are set to open Training Camp Monday, July 26th. However, their first round draft pick (12th pick overall), Ryan Matthews, is still not under contract. The Fresno State standout is expected to take over the Running Back position full-time. Prior to the NFL draft, the Chargers released future Hall-of-Famer, LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson later signed with the Jets. If history repeats, Matthews should be the next superstar running back for the Chargers' organization. Headcoach, Norv Turner also has a nice track record of developing productive running backs in the NFL. For Matthews, the possibility of a potential holdout could hurt. "I like the young guys to be here," coach Norv Turner said. "I'm anxious for Ryan to get here. He knows it's important to get here. There were three or four things that came up today that I would have liked to have him see. So yeah, he's missing things. Those things he can make up, also." For both Matthews and the Chargers, the urgency to get a deal put in place is critical. Matthews has enormous upside and has the capability of being the next "great" running back in San Diego. For the Chargers, they will be hard pressed to find a player to contribute as much as Tomlinson; but Matthews is a great start. As of right now, Matthews is one of 31 other first round draft picks yet to sign. WR, Dez Bryant of the Dallas Cowboys the only first rounder to reach a contract.
